Raleigh, NC (AHN) - 3 Week Free Trial Cam Ward reportedly indicated his willingness to accept added pressure after the Carolina Hurricanes rewarded its franchise goaltender with a six-year deal extension Wednesday. The new deal with a total reported value of $37.8 million is set to kick in at the start of the 2010-11 campaign.Ward, 25, playing in the final year of a pact inked in May 2007, was due to earn $3.5 million this season and was set to became a restricted free agent after this season.
The first rookie netminder since Ron Hextall to capture the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, Ward is expected to follow up on his outstanding performance last season. Last year, Ward landed third in the league in terms of wins with 39 and tied for sixth spot in shutouts (6). His feat enabled him to set a new franchise mark for victories in a season (39) registered by a goaltender. Ward also matched the franchise record for shutouts recorded in a season. Carolina's first-round pick (25th overall) in the 2002 draft, Ward helped steer the Hurricanes to its first-ever Stanley Cup championship during his rookie campaign.In next year's Vancouver Olympics, there is a possibility Ward may see action for Team Canada.The Hurricanes are slated to kick off the regular season vs. the Philadelphia Flyers Friday.
